Bottled Tastes

Great Pour

The Good

  • They did try to make an interesting game
  • The thing it felt they went after was Yakuza a bit, managing a store but also being a gangster

The Bad

  • Game is very jank, character models walk through each other, models moving weird
  • A lot of bugs encountered
  • Combat and shooting is very clunky to the point where certain stuff feels unfair to the player
  • Voice actor did not fit the main character at all
  • Can easily finish the act in less than 2 hours

*Note that I did get a review key provided for the game.

The trailer and short clips had me think this was a high end contender until I started it up and tried playing it with my high end PC, the game looks at what it’s aimed at, a story in 2012.

The game is quite clunky and wasn’t really something I enjoyed, but felt that I had to continue playing to give a fair score and while the developers did their best, it did not succeed at all fronts, something they can still improve for ACT 2 and ACT 3 that will be included when you buy the game now.

You can buy BLACKWOOD here, although I would advise to wait: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3639070/BLACKWOOD/

By day, you run a DVD store in 2012 New York. By night, you’re a ruthless assassin. BLACKWOOD is a cinematic third-person shooter with grounded melee combat, brutal takedowns, responsive gunplay, and a double life to manage.

The game flips your double life from hitman or gangster to DVD store owner, while this could have worked a bit, the simulation isn’t that realistic as you would expect from a simulator part of a game. You earn tons of money during the day as you sell a copy of a DVD for 50+ bucks just to spend it on more clothes or other cosmetics for your store.

Unsure if the assets are truly made by the developers themselves, some of them do feel very off. And next to that the chores do not really feel great as they are the same 2 spots on the wall, 3 spots on the floor for every day.

My overall complaint was the dialogue and voice over that just didn’t seem to fit, it didn’t give me the vibe of a hitman or gangster whereas I understand you want an innocent-like voice for the store, it just threw me off in the rest of the game.

You take on missions, upgrade your gun with mods you buy for the next mission and go out.

The missions are okay, you steal something and the cities mobster boss wants it back and comes after you for stealing it. Which has you navigate both on foot and by car, and I kid not when I say that the car mechanics are even worse than Watchdogs.

The game did overall give me a feeling of a Watchdogs meets John Wick, but it just failed to deliver what it set out to do. Hopefully the team gets more experience for the next acts as there will be 3 total and cleans up it’s act 1.
